For more than 20 years, Olde City Day School has been a pillar in its community, growing from one childcare center to seven locations and impacting thousands of children along the way. But as the school expanded, so did the challenge of caring for its workforce.

Childcare is a demanding profession, and the team at Olde City knew firsthand how difficult it was for teachers to access affordable, reliable healthcare. Traditional health insurance options were simply out of reach. As William Capers, president at Olde City Day School recalled, “We were contemplating health insurance and the price tag of health insurance was astronomical. At the time, my executive director came across Vitable Health and she convinced me that it would be a viable option for health insurance and in some ways could be a little bit better because of the onsite capabilities.”

Meeting staff where they are

Teachers often needed to take entire days off to manage routine care or urgent visits, leaving classrooms understaffed. With Vitable Health’s Direct Primary Care offering, that burden disappeared. Direct Primary Care gives employees unlimited access to virtual visits with trusted providers, making it easier for staff to stay healthy without the usual barriers of scheduling or long wait times.

The school also relied on Vitable Health’s Occupational Health services, which cover employer needs such as physicals, vaccinations, and compliance-related care. For Olde City, this was a game-changer. As William explained, “The most valuable piece that Vitable Health offers is the fact that it is the mobility of it, that they will come to you. That is huge because in our business, teachers had to take the day off just to get a physical. Now you can have Vitable Health come right up to the job. They will do the physical in the office. You do not have to take a day of PTO out.”

This flexibility even helped Olde City meet a critical licensing deadline. “We had a situation where we needed an entire site to get physicals, which was very important for our licensing,” he said. “Within a week, we had the physical date. That was great.”

Care that goes beyond physical health

Beyond routine care, leadership also recognized the growing importance of mental health support. “Adding in the ability to have mental health coaching is very important because the psychological pieces of life now have far greater impact than ever before,” William explained. “I need my people to have that if I am expecting them to come in and be 100 percent. I need to acknowledge and realize that life is tough right now and that if the only person you are talking to is the person in your head, we are all in trouble.”

This combination of everyday primary care and expanded mental health coaching has been embraced by staff, with an enrollment rate of 93 percent across eligible employees. That kind of engagement reflects how usable and accessible the benefit is in real life.

Making a measurable impact

The numbers also tell a powerful story. Teachers consistently rate their Vitable Health providers an average of 4.9 out of 5 stars, and the school staff gives Vitable Health a Net Promoter Score of 87, signaling just how strongly employees value the benefit.

More importantly, the care has made a direct impact on staff members’ lives. One employee discovered a serious health condition after visiting the hospital and later turned to Vitable Health for support. “Whatever medicines that Vitable Health prescribed worked way better than what the hospital prescribed,” explained a leader at Olde City. “There was a loophole because she needed to see a specialist, but somehow Vitable Health was able to work it out so that she could see the specialist, and it would be covered. Otherwise, she would have been paying for the specialist out of pocket, having to get this surgery, and all of that would be out-of-pocket costs. Vitable Health is helping her out.”

A better way to care for those who care for others

For Olde City Day School, Vitable Health has become more than just a benefit. As William put it, “Even when I got frustrated, the right people jumped in to make it right, which is all you can ask. No one is going to be perfect, but when it is not perfect, I need somebody that is going to make it perfect for me. That is what Vitable Health has done.”
