The federal government has introduced a new name for Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRAs): CHOICE Arrangements, short for Custom Health Option and Individual Care Expense Arrangement.
This change is designed to make this approach to employee health benefits easier to understand and help more employers recognize it as an option for offering affordable, flexible coverage.
The good news? If you already offer an ICHRA, your benefit doesn't need to change.
What Is a CHOICE Arrangement?
A CHOICE Arrangement allows employers to provide a set contribution toward employees’ individual health insurance coverage instead of choosing a single group health plan for everyone.
Employees can use that contribution toward eligible individual coverage that fits their needs, while employers maintain greater control over their benefits budget.
What’s Changing?
The biggest change is the name. The government is now using “CHOICE Arrangement” to describe this approach to health benefits, helping make it more approachable and easier for employers to understand.
As the new name becomes more widely used, you may start seeing CHOICE in benefits resources, industry communications, and educational materials.
What Stays the Same?
Although the name is new, the way the benefit works remains the same.
- Your budget stays in your hands. You decide how much to contribute toward eligible employees’ coverage, subject to applicable requirements.
- Employees keep their choice. Eligible employees can select individual health coverage that meets their needs.
- Your benefit continues as usual. Existing eligibility, affordability, and compliance requirements still apply.
- No redesign is needed. You don't need to change your existing benefit simply because the name has changed.
What Does This Mean for Your Business?
If you already offer an ICHRA, there’s no need to make changes just because it’s now being called a CHOICE Arrangement. You can continue offering the benefit your employees know, with the same approach to contributions and individual coverage.
If you’re exploring health benefits for your organization, CHOICE Arrangements offer another way to provide employees with flexibility while keeping your benefits budget predictable.
At Vitable Health, we’re here to help you navigate your benefits and understand your options as the industry adopts the new name.
In short: ICHRA is now CHOICE, but the benefit you offer—and the flexibility it provides—stays the same.
